The Four Beaches of Clifton

Clifton Beach Accommodation is situated on one of Four Clifton Beaches, Clifton enjoys direct access to the beach and is popular for its beach bungalows, beach villas, and beach apartments.

Clifton Beaches are a favorite for both locals and tourists, located in one of the most sought-after and luxurious suburbs of Cape Town. These four beaches are possibly some of the best beaches in the world. The Four Beach Coves are separated by gigantic boulders shielded from the unsettled ‘south-easter’ wind of Cape Town. The soft, white sand and the majestic blue water of each of the Four Beaches is an unofficial playground for anyone who wants to enjoy these hot summer days.

Unoriginally called First, Second , Third, and Fourth beach, each cove has its own personality, attracting multicultural groups of people of all ages.

1st Beach: frequently visited by residents and holidaymakers staying at adjacent Clifton Beach accommodation. It’s a perfect beach to avoid the crowd or enjoy a day of water sports. This beach is a dog-friendly spot.

2nd Beach: this little piece of paradise sees a lot of traffic coming from a relaxed younger crowd, particularly students. The more adventurous beachgoers will enjoy a day of volleyball and snorkeling in this secluded bay.

3rd Beach: Clifton’s gay beach is a popular gathering place for gay men, but it is open to anyone. The atmosphere is buzzing and lively, the beach is not as busy as its most popular neighbor, and the weather is still perfect to catch a tan.

4th Beach: the largest and most popular of the four beaches, 4th Beach is frequently visited by trendy visitors tanning and families constructing sandcastles. A traditional Cape Town beach with a fantastic holiday atmosphere, there’s no better place to visit on your days off than this soft sandy bay, watching yachts on the water as you soak up the sun. Fourth Beach also retains Blue Flag status, an international recognition for clean, safe beaches, great facilities, and environmentally friendly initiatives.

While Clifton’s beaches are not always suitable for swimming, with water temperatures at an average temperature of 10 ° C ( 50 ° F), this does not dissuade them from their world-class quality; besides, diving in the icy sea does not seem so bad during those unusually hot summer days. Step onto the smooth, warm sand, hire an umbrella and get relaxed by the sea, watching the tide roll in and out on the beach. Feeling a little too hot during sunbathing? Take a cold drink from one of the roaming vendors, or an ice lolly. If you feel a little peckish, pack a picnic or take a walk up the stairs to the Bungalow Restaurant, which is situated next to the 4th beach parking lot.

On a quiet summer night, locals love to end the day with a sunset picnic on Clifton Beach. In the late afternoon, you’ll find a festive atmosphere with blankets, baskets full of deliciously bought treats, and candles that are ready to burn late at night. Just be warned: it’s illegal to drink alcohol on the beaches of Cape Town, and you have to take all your stuff down – and back up – through the many steep stairs, so bring light. You’ve got to walk back and forth from the park.

TIP: In summer, Clifton is a popular spot and parking is scarce. If you intend to travel by car, be sure to arrive early to get a spot in a small car park near the 4th beach or along Victoria Road. We would consider using Uber to prevent headaches while seeking parking. Remember to bring light, as all the beaches are only accessible through steep steps and winding, narrow stairs.
